Personal Opinion
Titus Time!
A firm favourite here at Patina Nationale.
Many vintage watches have strong collector groups and communities, and that can certainly be said for the Titus Calypsomatic.
A firm favourite with Rolex collectors due to the similarities between this and the Rolex 6538 Big Crown. In fact this “ Small Logo “ dial with its glossy lacquer and gold gilt print has more than one similarity with Rolex. The gilt printing process on this dial was done in reverse, meaning the gilt colour is underneath as the base plate and the glossy lacquer is applied over it instead of writing the gilt text on top of the dial after the lacquer is applied. This is the same process that Rolex implemented on their gilt print dials where the gold colour is below the lacquer.
I think it’s common knowledge that Titus were inspired by some of the earlier 50’s and 60’s Rolex Subs, as just look at the amazing case and lugs. It’s not difficult to see why this reference is so well loved and sought after.
The reference 7085 we have here is the 2nd generation of the Titus Calypsomatic and as mentioned previously called the “ Small Logo “. All of the key original details are here, the lollipop hands, gilt dial, big crown, cyclops’s date window, signed case-back and also the original branded Titus rivet bracelet. It also has a slightly thinner case than the previous iteration.
This all original Titus has recently benefited from a trip to the spa for a sympathetic relume of the indices in keeping with the period, as they were shot, a common trait on these watches. It was completed by the best in the business (Mr James Hyman) and has full documentation if required.
It is running beautifully and ready for another 60 years!
This is a seriously cool diver with a cult following, and such a handsome piece.
There aren’t many better looking watches on the market at this price point than the Titus Calypsomatic.
What a looker!
