Personal Opinion

Best looking dive watch from the 1960s / 70’s!!? Got to be in the discussion.

This Triton J La Spirotechnique is a bona fide dive watch icon, but very much in the IYKYK (If You Know You Know) category with most watch collectors. So much to discuss here so let’s start with the most important.

Triton watches were launched in 1963 by Jean – Renē Parmentier and manufactured by the legendary dive watch case brand Dodane. A famous supplier of military watches to the French Army.

They were originally made for La Spirotechnique, especially for professional grade diving and divers. This is where it gets interesting, as La Spirotechnique was founded by the legendary Jacques Cousteau. At that point these watches were only sold in La Spirotechnique stores, and no where else. Where they were priced as a high end tool watch and incredibly exclusive. And as you can see by some of the imagery below, the cost of a Triton was more than Rolex or Tudor Submariners of that time.

So much so that Cousteau and his crew on the Calypso used Triton La Spirotechnique watches on their diving expeditions. As well as some French Military Combat divers.

The beautiful skin diver we have here for sale has the most incredible Red / Orange gradient dial with hints of cognac colouring in certain lights. The gold hands and lollipop seconds hand are perfect. Something that most may miss on this early MK1 reference is the raindrop zeros on the outer track which again proves that Triton / La Spirotechnique went that extra mile in terms of high end quality at the time. Running beautifully and in incredible condition, this is a special piece.

This watch was rarer and far cooler than any Rolex Sub in that era and for me it still is today. If the dive watch aficionados and forums are to be believed there are less than 20 still left in circulation.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to purchase one of the rarest dive watches out there, with a history most brands can only dream of. Currently the best priced version on the market. Especially in this condition.

If it’s good enough for Jacques Cousteau it’s good enough for you…..
